ABOUT THE BRAND
Philip Beesley Studio (PBSC) is an internationally acclaimed research and design practice that sits at the cutting edge of architecture, engineering, and art. Led by architect Philip Beesley, the studio is renowned for creating large-scale, immersive, and "living" kinetic installations.
This multisensory object resembles a living, breathing organism, both soothing and uncanny. It moves as a unified whole, like an organ made of multiple entities, slowly opening and snapping shut, mimicking breath. Its rhythm is meditative yet slightly unsettling. Through arms wrapped in of soft wool, fluffy fur, and mechanical motion, it creates a conflicting sensory experience comforting and unnerving. When left alone, the object maintains a constant slow-in, fast-out breathing loop. Projected light adds atmosphere, casting large shadowy shapes onto surrounding surfaces. When an entity enters the object’s perimeter, its behaviour transforms: the breathing organ extends all tentacles outward, revealing stretched ropes in a sharp and sudden movement, like a creature exposing its power. A scorching sound plays as a warning, conveying hostility and defence. When the intruder retreats, the object slowly returns to its calm, breathing state.
